Given that we are most of the way through Queen Sugar season 3 on OWN, isn’t this the time to start raising questions about season 4?
Let’s kick off this particular article by reminding you that it was over a year ago that the network first confirmed the series for a third season. Basically, this is a show that is really making us wait now for some more news on what lies ahead. There are still a few more episodes to go this summer, so hopefully, there is some more news that comes out before then.
Why is there a strong case for a renewal? More so than anything, all you have to do is look at the show’s social-media night. Week in and week out, this is a series that trends worldwide on social media. It has an enormous audience of eager viewers and because of that, there’s a reasonably good chance it gets renewed on the strength of this alone. Queen Sugar is giving itself the sort of free publicity that most other shows dream of; being a trending topic, after all, is one of the reasons that we’ve already seen Wynonna Earp renewed for an additional season over at Syfy.
Unfortunately, there are also some reasons why there could be some danger here, most notable that season 3 is down more than 20% on average in terms of live viewers versus season 2. In the 18-49 demographic, it is down more than 30%. These are trouble spots and if Queen Sugar doesn’t stop the bleeding moving into a possible season 4, there could be some trouble. Heck, there could already be some trouble now.
While the recent ratings trend has us worried, the social-media clout of Queen Sugar will likely lead to a renewal. The downside here is that being popular on social media cannot really be monetized all that easily, so this is no guarantee at the series’ long-term future.
