Doctor Who season 11: Jodie Whittaker, cast filmed in South Africa
In a new interview with Doctor Who Magazine today, the show’s cast members confirmed that they spent some time working overseas for the upcoming season, with Jodie Whittaker explaining that they had the immense challenge of getting a tremendous amount of work done within a relatively short period of time:
“The Doctor Who shoot was three weeks. It was warm, so that was good … The ambition was huge and the landscapes there – you couldn’t have got that here. But it required a lot of focus because we knew we had a lot to do in three weeks. We were working with a really great South African crew. They recommended things for us to do on our days off!”
Apparently, one of the biggest challenges of all for the cast was being there during a drought, which limited the amount of time in which everyone could shower. The water crisis was of course a massive challenge to the entire country, so by comparison, the cast and crew still had it relatively easy.
There are not many details out there yet as to why this episode needed to be filmed there or what the story is, but in a lot of ways that is probably better. One of the things that does make Doctor Who a show like no other is that there is this constant element of surprise around just about every turn.
