Bull season 3 debate: Should we get more two-part episodes?

Bull season 2 episode 7

As we get closer to Bull season 3 coming on the air, we do continue to have more questions as to what the story is going to be about. Today, we mean that especially through the lens of the show’s structure.

One of the things we saw fairly consistently through the first two seasons was a number of episodes that were largely self-contained. The TAC would get a case and then, over the course of the episode, you would start to get on the other side of it. It’s a pretty standard format for many shows within this genre and it’s understandable why most major networks would choose to stick with it. After all, why navigate away from something if it seems to work fairly well?

Yet, we do think that Bull shook things up to a certain extent at the end of season 2 with the Elliott Miles case and because of that, delivered something that was rather great in part because it was so different. You were able to build up a case over two episodes and see a genuine sort of push and pull with it. There are not too many cases within the world of Bull where it does seem as though he could actually lose. It’s a rarity, and it is because of this that it makes for good drama when you start to feel everyone sweat.

It’s with this in mind that we would certainly advocate for some more two-part cases moving forward this season, and judging from Jill Hennessy being cast in a recurring role, the series may at least be considering some stories designed to last longer than just one episode. This enables us to dive a whole lot deeper into the characters beyond just their time in the courtroom. Even if the show does continue to keep its heavy case-of-the-week component, we do hope that it does continue to give you stories that last longer than an episode. Think in terms of Chunk and his daughter during season 2, or what we saw with Marissa and her love interest who eventually tried to ruin her financially.
