Doctor Who alum Steven Moffat’s The Time Traveler’s Wife heads to HBO

Ballers season 3

More than six months after his time on Doctor Who came to an end, former showrunner Steven Moffat has a new home: HBO.

According to a report from Deadline, Moffat is going to be bringing The Time Traveler’s Wife to the network. The network believes it this project so much that they’ve already given the show a series order. There have been attempts to adapt this property to TV before, but this is easily the best venture for it — HBO offers up extensive creative freedom, and to go along with that Moffat is an imaginative storyteller who is also well-known for his work with Mark Gatiss on Sherlock. The two have also been attached to a Dracula project overseas.

In a statement per the aforementioned site, Moffat said the following about this particular project:

“I read Audrey Niffenegger’s The Time Traveler’s Wife many years ago, and I fell in love with it. In fact, I wrote a Doctor Who episode called The Girl In The Fireplace as a direct response to it. When, in her next novel, Audrey had a character watching that very episode, I realised she was probably on to me. All these years later, the chance to adapt the novel itself, is a dream come true. The brave new world of long form television is now ready for this kind of depth and complexity. It’s a story of happy ever after — but not necessarily in that order.”

Meanwhile, HBO programming president Casey Bloys added the following:

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Steven Moffat, Hartswood and WBTV on The Time Traveler’s Wife … Steven’s passion is evident in every project he’s written and we are certain that his love and respect for this mesmerizing and textured novel will make it a quintessential HBO series.”

We don’t imagine that this show is going to be on the air until at least 2020, but consider this another great project to look forward to in the future.
