The Blacklist season 6 spotlight: The possible future of Reddington

As we approach The Blacklist season 6, we’re going to be doing our part to preview the story for every character!

For every Saturday over the next several weeks, we’re going to be doing our best in order to profile a familiar face from the NBC show and project some of what the future could hold. These are purely speculative (no major spoilers), but are based on everything that has transpired in the story to date.

When you consider the story and mythology of this entire series, how can you kick things off with anyone other than Reddington? Below, we’ve got a handful of suggestions alongside what you can expect to see.

1. An attempt to keep up the facade – At the end of season 5, Liz Keen finally learned the truth that this Reddington is a fraud and not what he claims to be at all. Yet, we don’t want her to find that out right away. Instead, we think the series is so much more interesting in the event that he kicks things off trying to stay the course and acting as though nothing is wrong. There’s something interesting to that early-season dynamic of Reddington being unaware of what Liz knows, as opposed to the opposite that we’ve seen for more of the series’ run.

2. Him slowly putting together the pieces – Maybe come around episode 5 or 6, that could be the right time for Reddington to figure out that something is a little bit off with how much information Liz knows. That sets the stage for an epic battle of wits between the two characters as she tries to piece together all of the information that he has.

3. Some hints at this Reddington’s backstory – Maybe you reveal the truth about his identity in the finale, but before that, give James Spader a few scenes as this character with some of the walls down. That generates discussion and furthers along the theories that are so important to the show’s fanbase. You want to keep that discussion going!

4. Some sort of romantic arc – We do think it’s really time to touch on this again, mostly because it’s been a while and we really want to know if there is anyone who can beguile Reddington to let down some of his walls and cause him some unexpected problems. We like our characters tested, and there are plenty of opportunities moving forward to do this with the right scene partner.
