This Is Us season 3: Mandy Moore talks knowing series’ ending

This Is Us season 3

This Is Us season 3 is not being promoted as the final season, and we certainly do think that there are more years in the tank for this show.

Nonetheless, one of the great things that we’ve learned about the NBC show is that creator Dan Fogelman has already come up with how he wants the show to end — as a matter of fact, he’s already show some scenes for a potential series finale down that road! That is something that series star Mandy Moore talks about in a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where she notes that the reason for this is to capture everyone in a certain part of their lives. She also says that Fogelman does have a pretty good idea as to how long he would like the series to last, so we’ll see if that is something that NBC is okay with down the road.

Personally, the idea that Fogelman has already shot some scenes suggests to us that there are plans to at least make This Is Us last for more than the next couple of years. If the plan, for example, was to end things in season 4, would it really make a huge distance filming scenes now as opposed to in a year? Maybe slightly for the younger actors, but that is mostly it. We don’t think that This Is Us is the sort of show that should go on forever; personally, we’ve always felt like six seasons is the ideal length in terms of the entire story that the writers should want to tell here and also for viewers, who can occasionally tune out of shows if they go on too long.

Kimmel does have a good line in here in talking about series finales, claiming that the only people who liked the series finale of The Sopranos were members of the band Journey. We don’t quite agree, but at least it’s a funny take on how polarizing series finales can be.
