The first thing that we should remind you of at the moment is that the series has already been renewed for a season 7. This was something that was first confirmed way-back-when by Netflix, who gave the show a multi-season pickup so that it could plan out it’s future. That made a lot of sense at the time given that this is one of the biggest pioneering series on Netflix in terms of a show that made them relevant in the space of scripted content. If we had to say that there was a big three from the streaming service’s early days, it was this show, House of Cards, and the fourth season of Arrested Development.
When it comes now to figuring out the ideal season 7 premiere date for the series, we really don’t think that it is altogether difficult. This is a show that premieres in the summer every year, and we feel like one of the reasons why Netflix ordered so many seasons in advance is that it could try to stay in the summer. It can take advantage of the fact that there is really not all that much else airing then when it comes to new programming and exploit that to the fullest. This year was a bit of a later start date then it’s normal June kick off but it’s still in the summer months.
As for how long we can see Orange is the New Black really lasting, we can envision at least a few more seasons. We worried for some time that a story about prison would eventually run out of new stories to tell, but in between the riots last season and the shift in setting this year, the producers are trying to shake things up and give you something new almost every season. If it continues to do just that, there’s no reason why it cannot figure out a way to stick around. There are always new things happening in this environment – just look at Oz which went on for 6 seasons before it ended and it was left with a series finale that was easily open-ended to make more episodes if it ever wanted to come back.
