Suits season 8 episode 2 review: Donna, Harvey’s struggle with Samantha

Suits season 8 episode 2

Suits season 8 episode 2 came with a number of different challenges, with one of the biggest ones being finding a way to still integrate the character of Samantha Wheeler into the core cast. We already knew Katrina Bennett and Alex Williams entering the season and we liked them.

Learning to like Samantha, however, is an exercise in patience just because this is a character not altogether interested in being liked. She’s interested in results, and that is in part why Roberrt Zane has trusted her so much over her career. She isn’t well-known because that’s not of interest to her; the same goes for not telling clients the same story. She just works for people to get the job done and then, on the other side of it, they love her end product so much that they don’t care too much about her methods. She’s a little similar to Mike in the sense that her lies can be swept under the rug because of her results.

Yet, she has a tendency to not even try to be on the same page with people — take for example how she undermined Harvey during his attempts to try and satisfy one of Mike’s old clients for a case that could have major financial repercussions. Samantha went around him after Robert assigned her to work with him on the case; when she did it enraged Harvey further and he didn’t like her going in to it all. This episode was also a big one for the Donna – Samantha dynamic, which is also testy in its own way. Donna hasn’t been able to find much in the way of consistent dirt on her, and neither has Gretchen. Katrina has a little bit of working history with her, and that is the biggest resource that anyone has.

As we start to move forward now into this season, it does seem like Samantha is going to be mildly interested in adjusting her personality — even if it is only for the sake of trying to make Harvey happy so she can later get her name on the door. To us, the big storyline of the season is Samantha vs. Alex in terms of who becomes name partner. Harvey and Robert have each made promises, and one of them isn’t going to be able to keep it. We always like these name partner debates since it feels like Suits carries with it the tiniest sliver of DNA from Game of Thrones where there are people constantly jostling for power.

Louis Litt’s own view on power

He doesn’t want it anywhere near as much as you might think. As we learned tonight through his conversations in therapy (and also his conversations with Sheila) he is happy where he is, but is concerned that being there will cause Sheila to become disinterested in him. At first, he withheld how he felt from her, but he had to learn to trust her and she had to learn to allow him to be vulnerable and ambitious in his own way. The two figured things out, and determined in the process what really angers Louis — the idea that Harvey and Robert don’t even consider his feelings much of the time. He may not want managing partner, but his name is still on the door!

Louis Litt stories are some of the best because they are often so raw and emotional; this one was no exception, and with Sheila and Louis now trying to have a baby, he has a story coming up that could make many of his dreams come true.

CarterMatt Verdict

We continue to remain surprised that we’re enjoying Suits season 8 as much as we are, given the pain that often comes with losing familiar faces. Yet, Aaron Korsh and the writers have done a great job of centering in the stories around the cases and making sure that the new hierarchy of the firm has been established. We do think the show needs to become more personal again, but season 8 is off to a very good start.
