In today’s Outlander update, we’re talking about something that has crept back into headlines as of late … and is probably going to continue to be a part of the headlines for some time to come. As the title indicates, we are talking about Sam Heughan and the idea of him being James Bond.
Why are these headlines kicking off again? We do think that the reasons for that are two-fold. For starters, we have The Spy Who Dumped Me coming out, and with that Sam has a character who will definitely draw some Bond comparisons. Heck, even the title for the movie is a James Bond reference! It’s inevitable that these questions are going to come up, just like it feels inevitable that Sam would express interest in that role: Why would an actor not want to be James Bond? It’s one of the most iconic film roles in the world, one that generates a great deal of money and offers up so many other opportunities.
However, the thing that is the most important to remember here is that we’re likely still years away from any sort of official announcement being made. The producers have a lot of choices and may look for someone like a Sam or an Aidan Turner who has a huge fan base already, but they don’t necessarily have a sense of urgency to go in that direction. They likely have an awareness that what they have is bigger than any one performer and they can go in whatever direction that they want with the role. They want to get the right person in this role since it is iconic – remember how much resistance there was to Daniel Craig in the role (no one wanted a “blonde Bond”) and he’s fantastic!
So while it may be appetizing for many publications to make headlines around Heughan and Bond, it’s still way too early to be sure of something like that. Also, Sam’s still going to be a part of Outlander for the foreseeable future and there hasn’t been any formal talk about him leaving. So long as he remains in the role of Jamie Fraser, any other project would need to schedule around the show.
