Is a shorter Outlander hiatus coming between season 5, season 6?
At the moment, we are in the midst of one of the longest hiatuses in both departments that we’ve dealt with in a while. Season 4 is done in terms of production, but it does not air on Starz until November. Meanwhile, season 5 is not actually going to start filming until early next year. That means that we’re effectively stuck waiting for months to get some substantial news, especially since there are not too many opportunities to get some between now and maybe October, when the cast convenes at New York Comic-Con. We’re aware that there could be a few teases that come out of the official convention in New Jersey next month, but that is meant to be more of a fun fan convention and a little bit less in the way of sharing spoilers.
We are already preparing for a rather-long hiatus between season 4 and 5. With there being such a long break until filming first begins in February, we don’t anticipate that season 5 will start airing until the winter / spring of 2020. However, there’s a chance for a slightly shorter break on the other side of that. Why? For starters, production isn’t going to have to wait around for a renewal. They know that it is coming, and with that they can plan and schedule things out even more for season 6 in advance than they did for season 5. Also, with only 12 episodes in season 5 as opposed to season 6, that makes the production process a little bit easier. That saves everyone a few weeks of production.
While we hesitate to say for sure that season 6 will come out in winter / spring 2021, we at least think that it’s a firm possibility. To us, looking ahead at these sort of things is fun and also being prepared for Droughtlanders is important. We’re in the midst of a long one now and there’s probably a big one coming at the end of season 4.
Rest assured that, no matter the length of the hiatus, CarterMatt is going to have some other news coming up soon.

Waiting so long between seasons is torture. At least we have the books to reread and I always watch whenever STARZ reaires the different seasons. I understand the need to be thorough and do the story justice. But, it’s hard on fans. Torture is a very accurate word. We love seeing our Cait and Sam and all of their story.

Sam leaving after season 6? Then I will quit watching. Can’t have Outlander without San. Period.,This is troubling news.

I think if they continue to have big gap between seasons they run the risk of losing their fan base.

I am trying to stay alive to see the end of the series, but the way they stretch it out seems to make that goal harder and harder. The ninth book isn’t published yet and Diana Gabaldon still has the 10th and last to write. Sam has said he will probably leave after season 6 so the series might not last any longer than that. No one can replace him as Jamie. I’m 77 now and the chances I will ever see season 10 get smaller every year.
