Is Last Week Tonight with John Oliver new tonight? A video discussion

Last Week Tonight

Is Last Week Tonight with John Oliver new tonight on HBO? We suppose that this is a case of good news and bad.

Let’s start here with the good: There will be new episodes of the late-night series again shortly! Yet, there’s not going to be one tonight on HBO. The reason for that is rather simple: We’re still in the midst of a pre-planned, three-week hiatus for the series, which is the longest one the show has in between its premiere in February and its finale, which is typically in November.

Last Week Tonight operates a little bit differently from the standard late-night show, which are more reliant on quick monologue jokes as well as celebrity interviews, music, and audience interaction. This is, in some ways, a scripted comedy as much as it is traditional late-night. Almost all of it, save for the occasional ad-lib, is written and researched beforehand. The research on these pieces takes an extreme period of time, and these episodes are often jam-packed with content and very little filler. Even the “and now, this” video packages have to be properly researched and edited.

The reason that we saw all this to justify the breaks is because there’s way more work that goes into the average Last Week Tonight episode than any other late-night show. Therefore, the breaks are a chance for some to take a breather, while others can research and prepare for some other stories that are coming up. Remember that just because the show is off the air, that doesn’t mean that the show’s offices just close down. It is still a shame that there are no new episodes on weeks like these, especially when Oliver would likely have a field day on Donald Trump’s meeting with Vladimir Putin. (We would say that, while you wait for more episodes, you go back and look at his previous video on the subject — it telegraphs and explains quite a bit in its own right.)
