Why a Ghosted season 2 isn’t happening at Fox

Ghosted episode 10 return date

Moving into tonight’s finale, we do come bearing some rather-sad news: A Ghosted season 2 is not coming up at Fox.

What happened? Well, the comedy was officially canceled earlier this summer, and that came about as a result of lower ratings — but not impossibly low ones.

In reality, Ghosted is one of the strangest cases of any Fox series over the course of the past year. When it first aired some of its episodes last fall, it performed decently as a part of the network’s Sunday-night lineup. While it didn’t break any records, it fit very much in the middle of many of their scripted properties.

Yet, after that Fox really cut off some of the show’s momentum by not bringing the series back with more new episodes in the spring. That was basically a signal that they were moving on from the series, and that was confirmed with the official cancellation. The remaining episodes this summer are airing mostly so that Fox can claim that they aired the rest of the season. That’s great for the fans, but still disappointing for a series that absolutely had some potential. If it had been on a different network, or at least had different promotion, we do think that it would’ve had a chance to get slightly better ratings and a chance for a second season.

In general, Fox is showing that they don’t really have much of an interest right now in continuing their scripted comedy projects. Whether it be Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Mick, Ghosted, or The Last Man on Earth, none of their comedy projects (at least in the live-action space) are coming back for another season. Instead, they are programming in a different direction with their revival of Last Man Standing, which is going to lead off their lineup on Friday nights.

It doesn’t appear as though there’s a good chance of a Ghosted season 2 happening elsewhere; with that, expect the finale tonight to serve as the effective end of the road.
