Cloak & Dagger renewed for season 2 prior to Comic-Con announcement
You could probably see the writing on the wall for some time when it comes to a potential Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger season 2. There was not renewal announcement leading up to San Diego Comic-Con and with that in mind, it just made all of the sense and the world for the announcement to come at the convention. It’s basically a way to generate a lot of buzz at a place where it can be, at times, a little hard to stand out.
Per Deadline, Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb will make the announcement today after the show got off to one of the best starts for a Freeform series in years. It performed well both in live viewers and DVR numbers starting with the premiere to where we are right now. Basically, the writing was on the wall here. Remember that some of the reviews for Cloak & Dagger were also strong, which probably would have helped to get the show at least one more renewal even if the ratings left a little bit of something to be desired in the early going.
What this series has done that is rather extraordinary, at least so far, is find a way to be both incredibly timely without being preachy. Meanwhile, it’s also managed to make a comic-book property feel incredibly gritty and personal. This is a comic series that can be very dark, and you did see some of that reflected in what actually ended up making it on-screen. It makes you think and question the human condition in maybe some ways that you don’t quite get from other shows that are out there.
As for when a Cloak & Dagger season 2 could end up airing, the best guess for now is the summer of 2019 based on when season 1 aired as well as the timing of the renewal. Given the show’s season 1 success, there is certainly no reason to do anything different.
