Vikings star Katheryn Winnick, Sons of Anarchy alum joins Wu Assassins series

Netflix

Is Wu Assassins one of our most highly-anticipated series? It’s gotta be fairly high up on the list based on some of the people who are involved.

According to a report from Deadline, the upcoming Netflix series from John Wirth (Hell on Wheels, Hap and Leonard) is assembling a great cast including Vikings actress Katheryn Winnick, Into the Badlands’ Lewis Tan, Iko Uwais of Star Wars: The Force AwakensSons of Anarchy alum Tommy Flanagan, and also a pair of actors who Wirth worked alongside at Hell on Wheels in Byron Mann and Tzi Ma.

Wu Assassins is described as a “martial arts crime series with supernatural elements” set in San Francisco’s Chinatown, and based on the cast that we’ve just reported on and Wirth’s obvious talent, there is a definitely reason for excitement here — even if the show is still a good ways off. Other than Into the Badlands, there is a real absence of great martial-arts drama on television, and hopefully this series can help in part to fill that void. There’s also a sense of diversity among some of the members announced so far that is also worth celebrating.

The plan for Wu Assassins is for there to be a ten-episode first season at Netflix, and based on the show’s success, we’ll obviously see precisely where things go from there. Wirth’s previous series Hap and Leonard was canceled earlier this year by SundanceTV, and as sad as we remain about that, it is a thrill to see him with something else great in the near future. As for Winnick’s future on Vikings, that remains unclear, but you can make the same argument about the show itself. History has not confirmed the show’s future beyond the upcoming sixth season. The second half of season 5 also still needs to premiere.
