Cable Ratings: Power season 5, Preacher season 3, Younger season 6
We want to start with Power just because its ratings situation is incredibly interesting, mostly because Starz is basically indicating with it that they don’t really care so much anymore about its live+same-day numbers anymore. Instead, they are airing it across multiple timeslots and the show is generating incredible viewership across the board via the Starz app. They’ve always released episodes early on there, but more and more people are opting to check out the show that way now.
So, when you look at Sunday night’s new episode and you see that it only drew 700,000 viewers — a huge drop from the premiere — that number is incredibly deceptive. It’s only a fraction of the show’s viewers on Sunday. It’s smart for Starz to cater to 2018’s viewers, but selfishly it does make it a little harder to report accurate numbers.
Now, let’s touch briefly on a couple of other shows we haven’t mentioned too much in these pieces.
Preacher – The AMC series has always been somewhat of a strange mystery. It has a cult following and is one of the craziest shows on TV. Yet, it continues to struggle when it comes to live ratings. This season to date, it’s averaging only a 0.2 in the 18-49 demographic — a fairly steep departure from what it did in season 2. We don’t think it’s in huge danger of cancellation, but it’s certainly a performance worth watching in the coming weeks.
Younger – Meanwhile, consider this a case of differing ratings expectations. TV Land’s Sutton Foster series is considered to be a breakout hit for them, and it is averaging the same 0.2 rating. Yet, Younger already has been renewed for another season; meanwhile, it’s actually just about steady in the demo versus season 4.
