Game of Thrones prequel pilot could start filming this fall
According to a report from the Telegraph, the proposed prequel series (written by Jane Goldman) could begin filming in Belfast, Northern Ireland at some point this fall. Granted that, for now, this is just a pilot — production will happen on this episode, and then HBO can chose to do whatever they please as they work to figure out whatever else they want to do moving forward.
Just because filming for the pilot is starting soon is no guarantee that the prequel series (which is also has the involvement of George R.R. Martin) is going to actually be airing on HBO before 2021. If the pilot comes through without too many required recastings or reshoots, maybe it is possible for the series to hit a 2020 launch date. However, the original Game of Thrones pilot required a number of different changes behind the scenes, and that can cause the process of making the new show to drag on. It’s certainly for the best, though, and we doubt that HBO is going to be in any hurry at all in order to ensure that this new series is successful.
As for the prequel series choosing to film in Northern Ireland, we don’t think that this news is necessarily all that big of a surprise given that the crew and the architecture is already there. Given that this series is reportedly set a good thousand years or more in the past, there are likely going to be many changes. Yet, much of the geography of Westeros is still the same — also, HBO already knows and respects this crew. That goes a long way within this industry since you’ve got some of that trust built in.
