Shameless season 9 not necessarily final season
According to a report from TVLine, there is no confirmation via Showtime that we are entering the final year of the show; personally, we understand on some level why there would be ambivalence. Over the past few years, Shameless has become a breakout hit on the network even more than it was in the early days. The series averaged almost 1.5 million viewers last season in the live+same-day ratings, which actually is an improvement over season 7. That doesn’t happen all that often with live viewers in an era where there are so many other options for people.
Do we think that there’s a good chance that we could see a season 10 renewal come as a result of that? We feel like it’s going to be a collaborative decision with all parties involved. In theory, Shameless is the sort of show that could last forever since it’s really just the story of a family; yet, don’t you want to see some Gallaghers find happiness eventually? One of the fun trade-offs with this series is that in order for the premise to work, there needs to be constant dysfunction; the longer it lasts, the more the dysfunction lasts. We’re not sure these characters will ever really be normal, but we like to think that at some point, they could be in a better place.
Before the season 9 premiere a little bit later this year (read more about the premiere date over here), we figure that Showtime will announce more on the future of Shameless. For now, it has already accomplished more than many other shows in the network’s history in terms of its longevity.
