Outlander season 5: Preparing for the writers room (and the future)

Now that season 4 filming is done, we’re now at the time in which we start to anxiously look ahead to Outlander season 5 — even if it’s completely unreasonably on some level in order to do this. We recognize, after all, that the fourth season has yet to even air. As a matter of fact, we’re still months away from getting to it!

Nonetheless, it is interesting to note that production is already on some level thinking about season 5. With that in mind, we don’t feel anywhere near as bad doing the same thing. According to a post on Twitter via executive producer Matthew B. Roberts (who did a Q&A session yesterday in honor of filming wrapping), the team is “well on [their] way” when it comes to planning for the future. We know that Roberts is already re-reading The Fiery Cross (the fifth book in the Diana Gabaldon series) and we’re sure that there are already some production matters that are being looked at. After all, there are many things that have to be figured out months in advance — heck, in the case of many sets for season 4 they may have been built with season 5 in mind. Long before Starz officially renewed the series for a season 5 and 6, the producers behind the scenes likely had a good indication that these renewals were coming. They’ve got a very specific story that they are planning and every single detail needs to be plotted out from locations to scripts to finances. Not all of the work that is done at this point before a season is of the particularly-exciting variety.

Roberts also noted in the Q&A that work is going to begin “soon” when it comes to writing the fifth season. We anticipate that in the coming months, everyone is going to be back at work doing everything that they can in order to get some of these scripts perfected. As we’ve said in the past, it’s pretty essential for there to be episodes at the ready by the time filming begins. that allows the writers more flexibility in order to make changes or work on things production-wise if the situation calls for it.

Outlander season 5 filming begins in February, which is right around the time in which season 4 finishes airing on Starz. We’re already anticipating that there is going to be a rather-lengthy hiatus between 4 and 5 just because of the amount of time between these seasons filming.
