Timeless season 3 fails to land at another network; movie future uncertain
In a new series of posts on Twitter, executive producer Shawn Ryan confirmed the news with a series of messages described the efforts that were put in to save the show elsewhere. Read below.
1. [Studio Sony Pictures TV] has notified [fellow EP Eric Kripke] and me that efforts to land #Timeless at another network have sadly failed. While Sony will continue to look at any and all options, actor deals have expired and it appears there will be no Season 3 or beyond.
2. Discussions still take place between [Sony] and [NBC] about a possible 2 hour movie to conclude the #Timeless story, but there are considerable economic obstacles that make it an uncertainty. We will update you when we know more.
3. [Kripke], me, the cast, writers & crew of #Timeless want to send our immense thanks and gratitude to all the #ClockBlockers who fought so hard for this show. You made a second season possible and gave us hope for a Season 3. We wish the news was better. We love you all.
This is a gut-punch, and there is no other way to describe that. There wasn’t a whole lot of time for the producers of Timeless and Sony to find the show a new home, but we’re not sure it would have mattered even if there was. We do think that everyone out there within the TV world was aware that this is a show with a huge following; unfortunately, it is just also one with a reasonably-hefty price tag because of all of the different locations and costumes that come with time travel, let alone the effects and paying the cast.
For now, what this means is that we await what comes in terms of the movement, and slow down the #SaveTimeless campaign at least for the time being. We’re still going to lobby for a movie over at NBC, but we’re also a believer in taking showrunners at their word and not delivering on false hope. If this is the end of the road for Timeless in series form, so be it. Still, there is much to be grateful about, given that this is a series that cheated death once already and it feels like we’ve already received ten more episodes than we initially thought.
Still, never say never when it comes to a season 3. You never know what the future holds down the road. For now, the best thing that can happen may just be that the cast moves on. If they land big roles elsewhere, that could mean more attention for Timeless after the fact.
