Last Week Tonight with John Oliver talks Anthony Kennedy, Supreme Court

Last Week Tonight

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver started off the episode tonight with a discussion of Donald Trump and … weird speeches? Well, that is more or less what we could see almost every week.

Instead, the meat of the opening segment tonight was a discussion of Supreme Court judge Anthony Kennedy announcing his retirement and what this means for the future of the court. Oliver did his best to lay out what some of the arguments Democrats could make in order to delay some sort of confirmation process. Basically, the argument that Oliver made here is that Democrats are by and large screwed. If you’re relying on Susan Collins possibly flipping in order to help the party, you know that you’re in the midst of an uphill battle.

Basically, this was a fairly depressing opening to the show but hey, this is a rather depressing time for many people out there. Oliver even tried to joke that there was “good news” before claiming that there was no good news. His advice? Get a cardboard box, write “time machine” on the side, scream in it, and then go out, knock on doors, and try to actually vote in an election. Basically, he traveled a long way to make an important announcement when it comes to the importance of voting — it’s something that should have been apparent to many people beforehand, but it certainly is going to be apparent to people now. It’s ultimately hard to mine a lot of comedy out of a subject that is decisive, and also sad for many within Oliver’s core audience.

(Side note: Was anyone reminded of Calvin & Hobbes when Oliver talked about the box being a time machine? That’s the sort of memory that rushed back into our brain.)
