Following the finale tonight on CBS, will there be a Ransom season 3 renewal? Or, is the series primed to be canceled after two years on the air?
Let’s start with what is official — or not official — over at the network. There is no firm decision that has been announced, and with Ransom in general, this situation is complicated. Because this is an internationally-produced series, it’s not something that CBS has much stake in. As a matter of fact, it could be a renewal triggered by Canadian network Global that triggers it coming back — or at least there could be input from some international broadcasters.
Either way, don’t expect there to be some sort of decision coming in the near future, largely because there’s no real incentive for the network to make a quick decision. There’s no real reason for them to, especially since A) the series airs in the spring and B) season 2 actually wasn’t officially renewed until the fall. We think that this is a show whose future will be decided on in its own time, but the one thing we would be worried for is that the ratings for season 2 were down for season 1, and while there are some reasons for it (CBS isn’t exactly promoting this show hard), at the end of the day, does that really matter? CBS could just think of that as an excuse and the show should be performing better regardless … even though it has arguably the worst timeslot in existence.
We’re not optimistic on the future of Ransom, mostly because for CBS, it’d make just as much sense to broadcast repeats of their other shows in this spot and get ratings that are close to equal. It’s possible, though, that it gets renewed by Global in Canada or elsewhere, and it then ends up being moved to some other home if the price is rice.
As we’re trying to note, this situation is complicated, and we don’t imagine that it’s going to get any clearer over the next few weeks. Let’s hope you’re the patient type.
