Famous in Love canceled officially at Freeform; see statement

Famous in Love season 2

There is now no more drama regarding the future of Famous in LoveToday, Freeform officially announced that they have canceled the Bella Thorne drama following two seasons. The second one was down in the ratings, and that was even considering the fact that the first season was available to watch in its entirety the moment the premiere aired.

In a statement today, the network had the following to say about the decision:

“We are proud to have had the opportunity to air Famous In Love. After many discussions we have made the difficult decision not to renew the show for a third season. We want to thank our colleagues at Warner Horizon and our incredible producers, writers, cast and crew, especially Marlene King, for their creativity, hard work and dedication.”

Ultimately, this cancellation does reflect further some of the inherent problems that Freeform has as a network right now. While we understand that television is a business, they may have some issues with their model (which is reliant heavily on streaming) for there to be so many frequent cancellations of some of their shows. First, it was Shadowhunters (which we’re still hoping gets picked up elsewhere), and now, it’s Famous in Love. Given that it is coming from an outside studio it’s possible, in theory, that it could get picked up elsewhere. For now, though, it feels doubtful given that it doesn’t have the international popularity of some of the other shows that have waged successful campaigns as of late, and it also doesn’t have the ratings stateside.

For those of you who are big-time Marlene King fans, take solace that she does have another series coming in the future in Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, which will feature some characters from the original.
