Last Week Tonight start time changing admist Westworld finale, Succession

Last Week Tonight

For anyone out there wondering the Last Week Tonight start time following the events of HBO’s Sunday lineup, be prepared to be waiting for a little while than usual.

Because of Westworld airing an extended finale tonight, the John Oliver-hosted series is going to be starting at 11:30 p.m. Eastern time. Typically, we do not share many updates when it comes to start times for the series (doesn’t it always start late in some ways?), but with it being so late this time around it’s worth noting. We also say that feeling like this is the perfect time for a signature Oliver segment on a number of different things.

For starters, why not dive into a longer segment on the current immigration system, especially since there are few subjects more timely than this one? Oliver, as an immigrant, knows more about this than almost anyone. The only reason that we may not see this is simply due to the fact that Last Week Tonight does not always go the traditional route with some of its main segments. Take, for example, the piece on China and Xi Jinping last week, one that was met with a more-than-frosty reaction in turn.

Of course, you could also make a case that this is the perfect time for another segment on FIFA as the World Cup is happening — Oliver’s original takedown of the organization is, at least in our mind, one of the best pieces from the earlier time of the show’s run. It’s right up there with the segment about U.S. territories and also NFL stadiums as ones we could watch on a fairly regular basis. That was a simpler time when the show could really explore subjects that you could not predict in advance.
