Following what we’re seeing from the show this summer, should Elementary season 7 continue the pattern of summer airings? There is certainly a case to be made for it to continue on this spot and CarterMatt is ready to dive into the reasons why.
For starters, just look at the ratings to date! For season 6, the CBS show is averaging a 0.6 rating in the demo and almost 4.4 million viewers. While it is down versus the season 5 averages, it’s not down by much. Stopping the bleeding in the ratings has always been one of the show’s greatest struggles and this is why we are pleased to see it doing so now. Having this summer spot helps since it can isolate itself from most of its competition and ensure that it gets the majority of its diehard fans watching live. There aren’t enough great mystery shows this time of year and Elementary fills this void.
Also, Elementary continues to perform very well in DVR / streaming ratings, as well as in other territories around the world. We’ve long liked to say that this is one of the sneakiest hits on television in that very few Americans really understand the fullest extent of its success.
Given that Elementary is not on the CBS schedule for the fall, right now the easy assumption to make is that it is going to be back on the air next summer … or at the very least midseason but given how much we’re enjoying season 6 this summer, we rather prefer that the show stick to this schedule. The only way in which we foresee this changing is if some other CBS shows for whatever reason tank out in the ratings and with that, the network determines that it needs to make some moves and fill some spots.
Maybe by the end of this season, we’ll start to get more of a sense as to what the future holds. For now, we’re just grateful to know that we’re not in the final year of the show.
