NCIS: Los Angeles season 10: The Sam Hanna love interest debate

NCIS: Los Angeles season 8 finale spoilers

Mrs. Carter: As we get closer to NCIS: Los Angeles season 10, what could happen next for the romantic life of Sam Hanna?

Ultimately, I recognize from the start that this is a complicated question to answer, largely because this is such a complicated situation. We’re looking here at a character who is still mourning the loss of Michelle, and I don’t actually think that this story is put to rest just yet. Until the boat is complete and Sam gets to make that journey with his kids, it feels like there is still some powerful story here to tell with this character.

Yet, there is a chance for the producers now to at least start to look at the journey that is coming for this character on the other side of this, and a component to that could be a decision to start to move the character forward. Eventually, Sam deserves the chance to find happiness again and it’s hard to imagine that anyone would be upset with him reentering the dating pool more than a year after losing his wife.

So who would be the right love interest for Sam? You probably have to start off here with someone who is trustworthy, mostly because that is not something that is altogether easy to come by in the world in which Sam is regularly a part of. He has been betrayed before and with that, it makes some sense in order to find someone who can turn to in times of need. It feels like someone outside of law enforcement would really be best for Sam, someone who could be an emotional rock but also understand the nature of the job.

Of course, another appealing thing about eventually going in this direction for the character is that it could be a way to bring in some more talent to the show. Think in terms of a recurring character who can challenge Sam but also still be there for him. I love it when LL Cool J gets to play a vulnerable side of this guy, and the best way to do that is to bring in someone who forces him to open up.

Is it still too soon?

Maybe at the start of season 10, but don’t be completely shocked if this is something that the writers look at a little more closely by the time we make it to the second part of the season.
