Can Elementary season 6 address Moriarty WITHOUT Moriarty?

A little bit later this season on Elementary, we know that Sherlock Holmes is going to square off with a foe from his past. Yet, is this particular foe Moriarty? That’s something that we don’t have a firm answer to at the moment.

What is fairly clear at the moment is that pending some sort of enormous surprise, it doesn’t appear as though you’re going to be seeing Natalie Dormer on the show this year. There is zero reporting out there on the subject and with a star of her caliber, you have to imagine that it’d be a rather big deal if she was coming on board again. We feel like we’ve already covered our frustrations on this subject fairly well, so we’re better off looking at this subject a little bit differently.

Instead, let’s just pose this question: Is there a way to feature Moriarty without bringing the character on board? We think that there are a couple of interesting angles that the series could examine.

1. A different sort of means of communication – Could Moriarty send warnings to Sherlock electronically or via the mail? Or, if you got Dormer to do some uncredited voiceover work, could she call in some danger to Sherlock Holmes? We know that Sherlock’s father in particular is going to be targeted, so he could also just pass along the information to Sherlock personally that Jamie is haunting him. This could be a story that’s more about saving Morland than stopping her, and she could be around to fight another day.

2. Have a stooge of hers be a villain coming up – If you can’t bring in Moriarty, it makes at least some sense to feature a character who has been threatened by Moriarty on some level. This is a way to set up for a larger showdown later on in the series (there is a season 7 coming!), and also give you a reminder that she’s still out there. We’re all about building momentum to a final showdown … provided that said showdown eventually happens. Our anxiety at the moment mostly revolves around that.
