Elementary season 6: Should Joan Watson adopt be season’s end?

Last night on Elementary season 6, we saw a personal story that was very much near and dear to Joan Watson’s heart: A chance to get to a pregnant mother who was considering giving her baby up for adoption. She did her best over the episode to show that she was capable, but the real twist was that she actually showed that she was too capable. Not only that, but Sherlock accidentally ended up convincing the mother to keep the baby when that was not his intention.

Now, this brings us to another important question: Is it possible that we could end up seeing a situation in which Joan ends up becoming a mom by the end of the season?

The clear case for it, at least at the moment, is that we’ve already started to see things set up in this particular direction. We’ve had a chance to experience Joan’s journey over the course of six years and she’s often meticulous when it comes to what she wants. This is not a woman who is going to just rush into something for the sake of a whim. She wants this, and if it doesn’t happen to her at some point, it would be heartbreaking.

Of course, the concern on the other side of this is that introducing a baby could, in turn, raise questions as to whether or not it will change the show — that’s often the concern that comes with adding a kid to just about any show. We anticipate that the same thing is going to happen here if a new baby is introduced.

Personally, though, we have a feeling that the Elementary writers will figure out a way in which to make things work. They’ve shown time and time again that they know how to reward these characters, albeit at times in rather surprising ways. They can certainly do this with Joan. You can give her what she wants, but we wouldn’t be surprised if motherhood comes for Joan in a way she didn’t expect — maybe she stumbles upon the perfect person to adopt without expecting it.
