Better Call Saul star Giancarlo Esposito books new series; what does this mean for Gus Fring?

Better Call Saul season 4

Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad star Giancarlo Esposito has landed himself a prominent new role, one that could make his schedule moving forward a little bit more crowded.

According to a report coming in via Deadline, Esposito is going to be a series regular on the upcoming first season of Cinemax’s drama Jett alongside the likes of Carlo Gugino, Elena Anaya, Michael Aronov, Gaite Jansen, Chris Backus, Gil Bellows and Violet McGraw. Per the series’ description, “fresh out of prison, world-class thief Daisy ”Jett” Kowalski (Gugino) is forced back into doing what she does best by dangerous and eccentric criminals determined to exploit her skills for their own ends.” Esposito is set to appear as a powerful crime lord in Baudelaire. While he’s probably not going to be all that similar to Gus Fring, we know that Giancarlo has the talent to take on many a nefarious character.

So what does this mean for Better Call Saul? Esposito had a deal the past two years to be a regular on the AMC series, and the aforementioned report notes that there is a chance he could come back moving forward. We do wonder personally what this means when it comes to the story of Better Call Saul to come; could the show tell the remainder of Jimmy McGill’s story into Saul Goodman this season? (We have loved the idea of season 5 being focused in the future on Gene, the Cinnabon employee Jimmy eventually becomes after fleeing Albuquerque and getting a new identity.) Story-wise, it’s hard to write Gus out of Jimmy and Mike Ehrmantraut’s present.

We’re happy for Giancarlo given that having great actors doing great work is always something to celebrate.
