Elementary season 6 ratings update: How is summer experiment going?

We’ve been very curious about the Elementary season 6 ratings for most of the past month and a half, largely because we’re looking at a show that’s doing something quite unusual: Airing a hefty batch of episodes over the summer after initially doing so in the fall / spring. There was a chance that this could be a complete disaster, but we speculated that it would be okay given that finally, the show was in a somewhat-better timeslot than late Sunday nights, getting pushed all over the place due to football and other sporting events.

To date, there actually is a good bit to be thrilled about. The past two weeks, Elementary has drawn consistently a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic and over 4.3 million viewers. This is a nice recovery from when it bottomed out with the Memorial Day episode, which was never going to fare all that well because viewers are off doing other things.

What matters most in ratings, at least to us anyway, is charting the live numbers this year versus the ones from 2017. To date this season, Elementary is averaging just under a 0.6 rating, which is a drop of around 13% versus season 5. Yet, it’s down less than 10% in total viewers. Our philosophy is that anytime you can keep more than 85% of your audience year-to-year in an era of so many options, that’s a good thing. That’s especially true for a show that shifted timeslots and is now airing in a completely different time of the year.

Just for the sake of adding some additional context, this is the smallest drop that Elementary has had year-to-year over the entire course of its run. It’s always been subject to drops, but we’ve seen many happen of more than 20% over the years.

Remember, of course, that live viewership only tells a part of the story with the series in general. Elementary has for a long time been incredibly time-shifted with great DVR viewership, and beyond that it is also an extremely popular series all over the world. That’s helped it to secure a season 7 renewal only a short span of time into this season.
