Happy Hawaii Five-0 Friday! At this time in the week, we’re pretty used to being able to check out new episodes of the CBS series. With that in mind, it’s rather unfortunate that we are on hiatus.
Luckily, we’ve come up with the way at least for the next several Fridays to make the wait a little bit easier! We are going to be doing weekly character spotlights, as we’ve done in the past, for a variety array of different cast members. today, we’re kicking things off with none other than Alex O’Loughlin and his character of Steve McGarrett. How can you start the series off any other way?
When it comes to Steve, it is almost counter-intuitive to say that we want him to be happy while also saying we want him to go through hell, but from an acting and story standpoint, it is what we want! That is a big part of what makes Hawaii Five-0 such a great show. With the latter in mind, it would be nice to see a substantial adversary introduced at some point early on in the season and have that story carried through at least four or five episodes. It would be good to see him tested in ways that he hasn’t been before. You can certainly have his life on the line, but it’s almost just as interesting when people close to him are in danger and it is totally up to him to see whether or not he can make a difference in the nick of time.
In terms of his personal life, it goes without saying that at this point, we want to see more of what Steve is going through romantically. We know that everyone under the sun has their own preferences as to who Steve would should be with, and at this point, we’re not all that biased one way or the other. We just want to see more of a personal relationship if it is a big part of his life. It just feels strange that it’s out there and yet, it is rarely ever seen or spoken of anymore. It’s hard when a main character is with someone who is not a series regular, alas.
So how much of the restaurant should we see next season? That’s obviously another angle that you have to think about when it comes to McGarrett. We don’t necessarily think that this is the sort of thing that needs to be on the show every week, but we do like it from the vantage point of comic relief and the building up of his long-term future. We don’t want him to retire from his job anytime soon, but this gives him something to work towards whenever he decides that it is time for him to hang it up.
