For every Lucifer fan out there (CarterMatt included), we have some tremendous news to report on today — it’s officially coming back, but this time it will be on Netflix!
This is really big news, not just in that Lucifer is getting a send life, but that it was actually Netflix that picked it up since it’s been years since it’s saved a show from cancellation. The streaming service (for the first time since Longmire many years ago) is bringing back a show that was previously canceled by another network during its run. We’re hearing that the fourth season is going to be a shorter run than it’s been on Fox, but it’s still something to celebrate – especially since the show left on such a major cliffhanger!
According to Deadline, one of the reasons why it took so long for a deal to be hammered out here is because there were so many different issues that needed to be worked through in terms of streaming rights and ownership — for example, the first three seasons are streamed in the US over on Hulu, whereas in UK the series has been on Amazon. There is movement now to bring it to Netflix as well in the UK.
The timing here is very much appropriate, given that we were nearing the expiration of the cast’s contracts that would have opened them up to do some other things.
It’s hard to really put into words just how thrilled we are for every fan out there of this show and for the entire cast and crew. We’ve covered many campaigns to save shows in the past seven years of CarterMatt, but this by far has been one of the most positive, successful, and driven. From the showrunners to the performers to the fans, it’s been so wonderful seeing everyone rally together in support of this cause. It’s hard to imagine a more deserving group of people. Hopefully, this season 4 is really just a foundation to many other wonderful things to come with the series moving forward. We’d love to see a season 5, 6, and so much more if it ends up being successful there.
