The Originals season 5: Another hiatus is coming

The Originals

If you love The Originalsthere is one thing you should be aware of as you get closer to the end of the month: The folks over at The CW are going to make you wait for a while for the home stretch of episodes.

According to a report from the Futon CriticThe Originals will not be airing episodes on Wednesday, June 27 or the following week on July 4. Why? In the case of the latter, it’s pretty clear that they don’t want to run up against the Independence Day holiday and for good reason. New episodes are slated to begin on the other side of that come July 11.

Given that The Originals is in its final stretch of episodes, there is a pretty clear argument to just air one every week and completely disregard holidays and the like on the schedule. However, the presence of the spin-off series Legacies makes it a little bit less feasible for the network to do that. They want these episodes to perform well in the ratings since that is only going to help the spin-off perform even better.

Ultimately, one of the big things that we want from The Originals by the end of the story is a sense of closure. It doesn’t matter so much as to how it ends as it does, at least to us, that the show has a proper conclusion. It’s important to feel good about this specific story rather than just thinking that it is a precursor for Legacies down the road. Even though that may be a spin-off, the two have to be thought of as two very different things. Does the waiting feel pretty crummy right now? Absolutely, but it’s probably better in the end that the final episodes of the show are not airing across the Fourth of July and some diehard viewers may be stuck doing some other things.
