13 Reasons Why renewed officially for season 3 at Netflix

13 Reasons Why season 2

After spending a good bit of time raising questions as to whether or not 13 Reasons Why really needed a third season, Netflix is making their own thoughts clear on the subject. Today, the streaming provider confirmed that they are bringing more of the teen drama back coming up in 2019. Brian Yorkey is going to return as showrunner for the 13-episode season, and filming is set to kick off a little bit later this season.

Given that the second season did end on a cliffhanger, we cannot say that we’re altogether surprised to be revisiting this world for more. Yet, simultaneously we’re not altogether sure that more is needed. This show was mostly about Hannah’s journey and what ultimately happened to her. Yet, with her now gone and Katherine Langford poised now to not return, where does the story go from here?

Ideally, 13 Reasons Why season 3 would be a story of healing and determining whether or not some of these characters can repair the deep psychological wounds that they’ve suffered as a result of everything that has happened to them. That seems to be the more realistic approach here, or at least the idealistic part of our brain feels that way. Unfortunately, what we’re a little bit more concerned about at the moment is that this series is going to continue to be as dark and as difficult to watch as it has been since there are some more stories that were raised with that finale (we won’t spoil it for you here).

It has a very difficult line to tow here between offering up a realistic look at teen trauma and being something that sends a conflicted message to some of its viewers. We know already that there are some questions out there about that already that were raised in season 1 and the idea that this topic was being glamorized (not the take we got from it since we were horrified, but everyone is different).

What do you want to see in terms of a 13 Reasons Why season 3, and are you glad that Netflix is giving the series a green light for more? Be sure to share right now in the comments!
