Criminal Minds season 13: Should we meet more family members?
With some characters, it’s pretty clear that they don’t have much in the way of family — with others, we’ve already met some of them. Yet, isn’t there still a possibility for more? With new characters like Luke Alvez and Matt Simmons, there probably are more opportunities than with others. Either way, though, it always feels possible that some long-lost family members are brought in or that there are new friends potentially the job that you could introduce for almost anyone.
So what’s the merit in the writers deciding to do this for some members of the BAU? One of the biggest ones is that it offers up a chance to get some really good, personal material for some of the actors. It better informs some of their decisions and beyond that, gives us something more to discuss beyond just the cases. Granted, there are still two caveats that we have to consider here.
1. Not everyone loves the personal cases – We’re well aware of the fact that many people out there enjoy Criminal Minds the most when it is focusing on the BAU itself and some of the UnSubs. This is, after all, the foundation of the show.
2. Whenever we see a family member, it’s often bad news – Take, for example, what we saw of Matt’s wife this past spring. While that made for an excellent episode, how much do you want some of your favorite characters to be immensely stressed out because of family trauma? There’s something nice about thinking that they have some sort of refuge where, at the end of the day, they can go home and feel a little bit more normal.
