Elementary season 6 episode 5 review: Is Sherlock back at work?
Contrary to what the beginning of the episode suggested, Sherlock did not murder someone. Instead, this head was stored at a lab for a murder case that became very much about the business of medicine. There is a competition when it comes to tissue donation and ultimately, it turns out that the deceased in Eric Russo turned out to be someone who was immune to the H7N5. Basically, what this means is that his body was worth millions — his antibodies would be able to help other people. This is why it’s so valuable that you have someone like Joan Watson on your team! Her medical knowledge was essential to determining who was really behind the murder and their main purpose: Doing their part in order to create something akin to a universal flu vaccine. The murderer was a prominent researcher and author who knew what she had on her hands with Eric.
As for what happened on the other side of this case, we also learned something rather valuable when it comes to Sherlock — despite his condition, he was going to be able to continue his work with the NYPD on a provisional basis. This is not something that Gregson was altogether on board with given his recent history, but he was willing to allow him back on board for now provided that Holmes continues to meet certain conditions.
The final important note for this episode is that the mystery of Michael continues. This guy remains one of the show’s biggest enigmas and for good reason. After all, what is it that this guy really wants? He’s super-creepy, he may very well have a knack for killing, and he seems to have no problem low-key talking about Sherlock while at AA meetings. The one thing that feels fairly clear right now, at least for us, is that things are going to get worse here for Holmes well before they get better so long as he is around. (With that said, how great is Desmond Harrington at this? After playing the cop on some other shows, it’s rather fun to see him in this sort of role.)
CarterMatt Verdict
Elementary tonight had a great case, some forward movement in some side stories, and Sherlock with a severed head. In the end, what’s not to like here? It’s probably the most memorable episode of the entire season to date.
