Emmy Hopefuls: The case for Grey’s Anatomy star Sarah Drew

Sarah Drew

In this edition of our Emmy Hopefuls series, we are talking on a performer in Sarah Drew who, in her final stint on Grey’s Anatomyreally left it all out there on the field. If you are going to exit a show, why not go out with one of the best arcs imaginable?

From start to finish in season 14, it is easy to have plenty of praise for Drew for everything she brought to the table as April Kepner. There was always a ton of heart in her performance but over the course of this season, we also got to see something a little bit more as the character was put into a position where she was forced to question one of the things that was most important to her: Her faith.

The arc that Drew had over the course of the winter and spring was fantastic, mostly in that it allowed her to explore the lightness and darkness of this character in a real, drawn-out way over several episodes. You saw April when she was completely lost and scrambling to find something stable for herself; meanwhile, you also saw this character when she started to ground herself once more and figure out what mattered most to her. Her scenes with Jesse Williams, another long-underrated Emmy candidate, were nothing short of outstanding. Versatility was really the key with Drew this time around as a performer — there were light, funnier moments for her to take on, but also some of the most devastating of her entire run on the show. Her life was on the line at one point, and at another she had to guide a rabbi through his own final day on Earth. That particular story, and that episode as a whole for April has to be one of her best episodes of the entire series. She discovered herself while giving someone else closure at the same time.

Do we think she has a real chance? – Anytime we’re talking about an actor from a network show in relation to the Emmys, there’s always going to be a certain degree of “it’s a long shot” to it. It’s hard to describe it any other way just because the Television Academy tends to lean more towards cable and streaming dramas at this point. Also, with Grey’s Anatomy running for so long we do think that people tend to take advantage of the series in general.

It would certainly be nice, though, to see Drew get some love for playing such an iconic character who brought a perspective not often seen on TV — especially since there is not going to be another chance to see it coming up.
