How The Flash season 5 plans to explore Killer Frost’s origins

Caitlin Snow - Julian Albert

When The Flash season 5 premieres on The CW, it feels as though there’s already a really good Killer Frost / Caitlin Snow story built into the narrative. We’ve learned now that Caitlin actually had her powers before the particle accelerator incident, so there is clearly something to explore within this. Beyond that, we do also have some other questions in regards to a possible connection with Caitlin’s father, who we are 100% convinced is important somehow to figuring all of this mystery out. He was explicitly mentioned near the end of the season and not completely resolved — we just want to know both if he’s involved in the real Killer Frost origins and how.

Alas, you’re not going to get news on that at this particular moment, but we can offer up the following tease from executive producer Todd Helbing (via TV Guide) that is absolutely interesting in its own right:

“[Caitlin learning about the history of her powers] completely changes her thinking about her powers and obviously where they came from … It’s the main mystery for her next season, and it’s going to lead her down a path that she certainly did not expect to walk down.”

What we’re hoping to see over this particular batch of episodes is something that is very different in terms of an origin story, and also one that explores different possibilities for how meta-humans are born. This, in turn, could open the door for other people with powers to be out there — which is something that a show like The Flash does really need to do in order to refresh their villains every so often. After all, there can only be so many different people who were impacted in some way by the particle accelerator … right?

Beyond the story for Caitlin, there are a few clear things that we know are coming over the course of The Flash season 5, starting with the big reveal that Nora West-Allen is going to be a key part of it. Beyond that, there was a villain that originally was going to be teased before the reveal was cut for time.
