Where The Flash season 5 should take WestAllen next?

WestAllen

Mrs. Carter: Moving into The Flash season 5, it’s fair to say that WestAllen is in a rather unusual place … even for this show!

Somehow, I would say that defeating a man notorious for stealing the powers of other meta-humans to create a device able to wipe away the world’s intelligence is somehow normal compared to what’s coming for Barry and Iris now. Their daughter from the future Nora West-Allen is now in the present, she is a speedster, and she seems to need their help in order to repair a problem that she caused. This is a young woman who (seemingly) has managed to cause her own version of Flashpoint. As you would imagine, that’s a problem.

I don’t want to waste too much time here speculating on what Nora’s problem could be, mostly because it feels like there are going to be many weeks coming up in which we will have an opportunity in which to do that. Instead, a good question to pose is this: How will all of this impact the WestAllen relationship in the present?

In some ways, it may serve as a source of strength for Barry and Iris that their relationship withstands the test of time. There may also be some excitement that comes from learning that they have a daughter who seems to be concerned with doing the right thing (not that I’m altogether surprised with this). Maybe this brings the whole family together, and family seems in general like a big theme for season 4.

If there is one thing I’m concerned about as a source of tension, it’s that Nora’s arrival could accelerate the relationship timeline in a way that Barry and Iris aren’t quite prepared for! While they may be married, I didn’t get the sense in the finale that Barry especially was ready to be a dad. This could scare him a bit. It’s a responsibility that he hasn’t quite had — there’s a big difference between being a mentor to Ralph Dibny and being a father when you are still figuring things out with yourself.

As we all enter season 5, let’s just say that it’s a good thing Barry and Iris have a therapist. They may need it to deal with the sudden rush of excitement (and uncertainty) that comes via their daughter’s arrival. They may even learn things about their future selves that surprise them!
