Empire season 4 finale: What happened to Anika?

Empire season 4 episode 1

Is Grace Gealey leaving Empireand is Anika actually going to be gone from this show for good? That’s a great question coming out of this finale.

In a way, it’s almost poetry precisely what happened to her — the most gory, violent poetry ever. Given precisely what happened to Rhonda, it only makes sense for Anika to fall potentially to her death. It was shocking, especially when you consider that in this same episode it seemed as though Anika had finally taken some control and power away from the Lyon family.

So why did this move happen? Speaking in a new interview with TVLine, executive producer Brett Mahoney had the following to say about the decision to kill the character off:

I feel like Anika’s storyline had reached its [conclusion]. She achieved what she wanted to over the course of the series, from first wanting Lucious and then just wanting Empire. She got everything she wished for, but it came at a great price. Karma finally caught up with her. She ascended to the throne but then she had to pay for everything she had done in the past.

It is true that the character of Anika had a tremendous run and did a lot of big, surprising things over the course of the show’s run. It’s still sad to see her go, though, given that we would attribute some of the success of the show to the role that she played in it overall.

New episodes of Empire are going to be airing a little bit later this fall — we’ll see just how the story goes from here, but suffice it to say it’s going to feel a little bit weird without having this particular character around.
