How Supergirl season 3 is showing maturity with Kara, Mon-El

Mrs. Carter: Is Supergirl on The CW making their ‘shipping a little bit more nuanced than in years past, at least when it comes to Kara?

One of the best things to remember about Supergirl is that, at its core, this is not a love story. It’s a superhero show about saving a city and sometimes, romance factors into that equation. We’re following these characters in all aspects of their personal lives — sometimes, they are going to be in love. Other times, they are understandably going to have some other priorities.

For Kara, the best thing that they could do after what happened with Mon-El last year was not throwing her into another relationship right away. She’s a little more hesitant and a little more mature after going through what she did last year. The writers are making her act like any person would! She had her heart broken and given her responsibilities helping to save the world, throwing another love interest in there didn’t make sense.

As for whether or not Mon-El and Kara should pair up again, I honestly think there are a lot of other issues that need to be addressed. For starters, matters between Mon-El and Imra are certainly still shaky; beyond that, there are other issues at the moment far more pressing than whether or not they get back together.

The thing that does impress us about Mon-El, regardless of whether or not he and Kara get back together, is seeing him realize this season that being reckless with his feelings will get him nowhere. One of the biggest criticisms about the character in season 1 was that he was too much about himself and Kara had to figure out how to bend over backwards to suit his needs. Now, he is taking her feelings into consideration and making sure that he doesn’t do something to distract from what she’s going through. He’s being helpful and doing his best to be honest. It doesn’t feel so much like a teen romance anymore, which is good since this isn’t a teen show.

If you love Karamel, what the Supergirl writers are showing this season is a maturity that could make the two have a stronger, healthier relationship if they ever get back to the point in which they are together. If you don’t watch the show for romance, then in general you’re probably happier that the focus has shifted more away from matters of the heart this season. I’m definitely invested in seeing where this Kara / Mon-El story goes now that it seems like he is more emotionally attentive; the best thing for the show to do is find a way to handle this in a way that doesn’t get anyone hurt in the process.
