Even though tonight marks the season 8 finale of Blue Bloods, we don’t think that it is too early to start having some conversations in regards to season 9!
To be specific, one of the things that CarterMatt is wondering right now is when this already-renewed season 9 is going to premiere? On paper, it seems fairly clear that you will get a chance to see it starting in late September / early October on CBS. This is not a show with a habit of changing all that much and that consistency is a factor in why this show does as well as it does. Blue Bloods has long been a staple on Friday nights at 10:00 p.m. Eastern time, and quietly it has become one of the network’s most-successful series. Routinely it delivers big ratings in total viewers and it does that without a whole lot of attention or publicity. Much like the Reagans have their frequent family dinners, Blue Bloods is a family tradition for many people out there.
The larger question that you have to wonder about at this point in the series’ run is simply this: How long can Blue Bloods actually last? We know that it’s not the cheapest show to make (filming in New York is often pricey), but the success of the show helps to compensate for that. The ratings have proven over the years that if the show ever ends, it is probably not going to be for lack of viewership. Instead, it would be just because the cast or crew wants to move on and do other things. There could be a point eventually where most of the main cast is ready to walk away, but we aren’t quite there just yet. Amy Carlson is one of the first longtime cast members to leave; hopefully, the remainder are going to stick around in one form or another for some time.
CBS will officially announce their full schedule for Blue Bloods season 9 and many of their other shows at their annual upfront presentation next week. It may take a little bit longer for the official Blue Bloods season 9 premiere date to come out, as these are the sorts of announcements that are reserved for the summer when the finer details can be hammered out a bit more.
