ABC orders Nathan Fillion’s The Rookie to series; first teaser

Nathan Fillion’s ABC series The Rookie was long considered a lock for series pickup, and with that we can’t say that we’re surprised to learn that it is officially coming on board the network’s 2018-19 season. The show comes from former Castle executive producer Alexi Hawley and is based in part on a true story. Fillion is set to play John Nolan, a fortysomething man who decides to move from a small town to Los Angeles in order to change his life. You can see more via the official logline below:

Starting over isn’t easy, especially for small town guy John Nolan who, after a life-altering incident, is pursuing his dream of being an LAPD officer. As the force’s oldest rookie, he’s met with skepticism from some higher-ups who see him as just a walking midlife crisis. If he can’t keep up with the young cops and the criminals, he’ll be risking lives including his own. But if he can use his life experience, determination and sense of humor to give him an edge, he may just become a success in this new chapter of his life.

This series features Fillion alongside Alyssa Diaz as Angela Lopez, Richard T. Jones as Sergeant Wade Grey, Titus Makin as Jackson West, Mercedes Mason as Captain Zoe Andersen, Melissa O’Neil as Lucy Chen, Afton Williamson as Talia Bishop and Eric Winter as Tim Bradford. (As a longtime fan of Dark Matter, we’re definitely excited to see O’Neil come on board this show.)

The first promo for The Rookie can be seen below and based on this alone, we’re rather surprised by the town. While this is under 30 seconds in length, it’s a little bit serious than we imagined. We probably think that, though, just based on Fillion’s past resume playing Richard Castle and, before that, Captain Malcolm Reynolds on Firefly. One of the reasons why we considered The Rookie to be a near-lock for pickup
