Is Instinct canceled at CBS? Upcoming schedule looks murky
While there was originally set to be an episode of the series airing on Sunday night, the show starring Alan Cumming has been removed from the CBS schedule. Meanwhile, all upcoming episodes have vanished from the network’s press site. While not officially canceled at the moment, the future certainly looks rather murky for the mystery series.
If this cancellation sticks, we would say that this is one of our biggest surprises of the year — not so much in terms of it getting canceled (that was always likely to happen), but the way in which it’s happening. Why remove the show now? While we always thought it was somewhat of a longshot, it also was performing reasonably well in total viewers — it was drawing more, after all, than many shows on other networks that have already been renewed.
When thinking about the Instinct renewal with that in mind, this really tells us a couple of different things more so than any other. First and foremost, it shows that even though CBS cares more about total viewers and people outside the 18-49 demographic more than any other broadcast network, the demo still matters. This show’s struggles in that metric are one of the reasons, potentially, for its apparent demise. Meanwhile, it also shows that they have a lot of stock that they’re putting into the Sundays-at-8:00 timeslot. We’re not sure why they opted to put two new shows there this season in Wisdom of the Crowd plus Instinct, but we really don’t think it did any of them either favors. The expectations were too high coming out of 60 Minutes and the marketing for the two shows didn’t really encapsulate enough about what they were.
