Emilia Clarke says Game of Thrones season 8 could lead to divisive reactions

Game of Thrones season 8 is set to be the final one for the series, and with that of course comes super-high expectations. It is virtually impossible to write a series finale without drawing some extremely polarizing reactions and that is almost precisely what we imagine is going to be coming up here.

So what did series star Emilia Clarke have to say about the nature of the series’ ending? Speaking in a new interview with the Herald Sun out of Australia, the actress behind Daenerys had the following to say about some of what people may be saying on the other side of the last episode airing:

“People will scream and people will say, ‘That’s exactly what I wanted.’ … And some people will go, “huh?” – my mum, probably.’”

None of this should come as a surprise, given that Game of Thrones was never a show meant to make everyone happy. It’s almost destined to have a buzzworthy and polarizing ending that will make some thrilled and others enraged. The truth of the matter here is this: In between who ends up on the Iron Throne and what happens in the battle against the White Walkers, there are a number of different theories that are out there. Some will be right and others will be wrong. The word that always comes to mind with us in describing the ending is “bittersweet,” mostly because that is what series author George R.R. Martin has said is an accurate word to describe the end of A Song of Ice and Fire. It makes sense that a fairly similar sentiment would carry over to the show.

For now, though, be prepared to wait for a good while given that Game of Thrones is not going to premiere on the network until we get around to the new year.
