Supergirl season 3 spoilers: Melissa Benoist on trouble ahead for Supergirl, Lena

In terms of drama, Supergirl season 3 is at its peak for many different reasons. Take, for starters, having Reign, Purity, and Pestilence all together for the first time. It goes without saying that this is a problem, and it’s especially so much more of one when you consider that one of these villains is actually Kara Danvers’ close friend in disguise.

Beyond that, though, there are a number of other interesting variables that are also in the mix here, and that includes seeing what happens in the aftermath of Lena’s secret coming out. It’s not just that she was holding Sam in effectively a research prison, but it’s that she didn’t bother to share any of what she was doing with anyone else. That’s going to cause a major problem for Supergirl, but for Kara Danvers what’s so interesting is that she can’t let on that she knows what her alter ego knows. That’s a big part of the fun that comes with Lena not knowing the truth about Supergirl and her secret identity.

In speaking on this further now in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, series star Melissa Benoist had the following to say about the story that is coming up:

“We explore that a lot in the following episodes … Kara and Lena remain the same, but after the cards are out on the table, I don’t know if Supergirl and Lena will ever be the same. And it’s interesting for Kara in that she listens to what Lena has to say about Supergirl, with Lena not knowing that she’s talking to her face. And that can be hurtful and uncomfortable and reveal a lot, so that’s not exactly what you want in a friendship.”

Is there an interesting amount of irony in the fallout from Lena’s secret? Sure, mostly because of the fact that Supergirl’s been keeping a secret of her own from Lena since the beginning. This is the sort of thing that could have devastating consequences if it comes out, though it doesn’t seem to be at risk in the immediate future.
