Is an Instinct season 2 renewal still possible at CBS?

Instinct season 2

Is there some talk of an Instinct season 2 happening, effectively defying some of the odds that were out there for the show going into the premiere? We’ll be the first to admit that we weren’t sure that the Alan Cumming series had much of a chance before the premiere — it was premiering on a difficult night at a difficult time, and while many viewers were starting to flock towards some warmer spring weather.

Yet, it now seems as though there could be a chance to get more of the show still. We said last night in our new Q&A video with readers (be sure to subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube for more) that Instinct was a longshot for renewal, but there was still a chance thanks to a total viewer count. Now, we’re getting a little more insight suggesting that this could be the case.

Per THR, there’s a possibility that Instinct could get an eleventh-hour renewal much in a similar way to Criminal Minds. By eleventh hour in this case, we wouldn’t be shocked if CBS waits until right before upfronts in order to decide. The ratings for the next couple of episodes could really matter here — it’s performing well in total viewers and we do think that this is what it has going for it. Also, with Cumming as a lead we do think there’s a chance that it could build more of an audience over time.

Even if Instinct is renewed, though, we would be shocked if it gets a 22-episode order. Instead, what we’re likely looking at here is a case of it maybe getting another 10-13 episodes in order to see if it can shine once more. CBS has a busy fall schedule so it’s hard to be confident about it getting a spot there. It’s also possible that it could air in the summer.
