Westworld season 3 renewal confirmed at HBO

This didn’t take all that long at all — not too long after the premiere of season 2, HBO has confirmed that a Westworld season 3 renewal is now official. The adaptation from Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy is going to be coming back for another batch of episodes in the future, one that will hopefully further expand the universe while also delivering some stellar performances in the process.

In a statement today further confirming this rather-great news, the network’s programming president in Casey Bloys had the following message to pass along:

“It’s been an extraordinary pleasure to work with the exceptionally talented Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, as well as their gifted cast and crew … From the inspired storytelling to the incredible visuals, we are so excited to see where the next chapter will take us.”

To date, Westworld season 2 is averaging close to two million live+same-day viewers a week, an increase of over 7% from the average season 1 viewership. This is also still a show with potential to improve as the season goes on, especially as many of the major television networks enter their hiatus for the summer. It’s a show to watch and we are certainly rather eager to see where some of the numbers go from here.

When it comes to the overall future of the series, though, there are still many different question marks in regards to precisely when a Westworld season 3 could actually end up airing. It took over a year to get season 2 out there for viewers and with that in mind, it wouldn’t be a shock if season 3 doesn’t come out until the fall of 2019 or later. Remember that HBO has a very busy 2019 programming slate as it is, with both Game of Thrones and True Detective returning at some point in that span of time. They also could end up having another season of Big Little Lies depending on when they want that season to premiere. (Season 2 of Big Little Lies is currently in production.)
