Fear the Walking Dead actor explains his decision to leave

Fear the Walking Dead season 3 episode 11 review

We should start this Fear the Walking Dead article with another reminder that it contains spoilers for Sunday night’s new episode. Read on at your own risk.

If you are still with us, there’s a reasonably good chance that you already know that Frank Dillane (who plays Nick on the series) is now officially gone. The character was killed off on Sunday night’s new episode, which makes this the second straight year in which the AMC series has opted to remove an important character from the equation in the early going of a season. (Last year, the person killed off was Cliff Curtis’ Travis.)

Yesterday, the news came out that it was Dillane’s decision to depart the show, and that this was something that he first went to producers about back during season 3. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in a new piece, he explained this decision further:

I had been doing it for three or four years, the show has undergone many changes in terms of different people in charge, all of this stuff, and I just felt like the beginning of this season kind of felt like the end of an era with this show. And television is hard work, and you have to shoot a lot. I also missed Europe very much. I’m not American, so after a while I get quite homesick and all of those things. I also felt like we had achieved what needed to be achieved in the first few seasons, so I thought it was time to keep moving.

When you hear him spell everything out it does make a good bit of sense. It’s rather different from an American actor to work on a show like this when it’s a little bit easier to go back home around production. For an actor from somewhere else, it may be a little more challenging. In general, television acting in the UK is often rather different to begin with given the fact that shows often operate with shorter seasons and actors tend to have far more flexibility.

We’re very much excited to see what Dillane has lined up for the future — though at the same time we’re absolutely going to miss him. You can see more of our reaction in the video below; to get more like it, be sure to subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube.
