Tonight, NCIS: Los Angeles season 9 episode 20 carried with it the title of “Reentry,” and that was a clear reference to what was happening in the Angeles Forest. Sam, Callen, and Nell were on the ground at the Angeles Forest trying to figure out what happened with some rocket rocket parts. In the process of this, we also saw Deeks and Kensi end up going undercover while at a driving range, which led to some fantastic lines including Deeks saying “I’m glad we ironed this out.” (Deeks puns are some of the best pens out there.)
Eventually, though, the whole point of this case was just about getting answers and also taking out some very bad people who were hiding out in that forest. You always want to stop dangerous materials from falling into the wrong hands but eventually in cases like this, said “wrong hands” turn up and are insistent on causing a wide array of different problems. It’s also worse when some of the “wrong hands” are actually a part of the good guys. There was also a bomb, and for a brief period of time Nell thought that Sam and Callen were blown into bits.
In the end, it turned out that the person the team was actually trying to stop was Gates, a woman who was working alongside the rest of the team.
The side story this week revolved around Hetty trying to help Keane adjust to life in America — this was a fun, nostalgic story at first … at least until the part where it seemed as though Hetty was dying as a result of what happened to her overseas. It feels a little early to know for sure if her life is going to be in jeopardy this season but it’s definitely something to be concerned about. (You can read more in regards to Hetty’s possible future over here.)
The episode concluded with Keane being by himself and with that, making a decision that he could actually need some help. That is something that we do all need from time to time.
Tonight’s NCIS: Los Angeles episode had it all: Sam and Callen getting a meaty case alongside Nell, a tabs-vs-spaces argument that brought to mind Silicon Valley, and then also a more personal, emotional story that suggested that Hetty may be in trouble. Overall, we’d call this an episode that brought so much more than we expected to see going into it.
