While we await official word as to whether or not CBS will make a Scorpion season 5 renewal official, now does seem like the right time to pose the question in a different way: When will the network have to make a decision? How much time do they really have?
For the sake of PR, we would argue that the network has a little under three weeks in order to properly figure this out. CBS’ upfront presentation is coming on May 16, and by this point most networks like to have their roster of shows solidified for the new year. That means giving you a sense as to what the fall schedule is going to be coupled with also making it clear as to what the midseason plans are. CBS doesn’t necessarily need to make a decision on the future of Scorpion at that point, but more than likely that is something that they would like to have figured out for the sake of creating an upfront presentation with clarity. Also, we don’t know what sort of new information they would really get on Scorpion after this point that would force them to have to wait a while longer in terms of making a decision.
As for when they technically need to have a decision made, that is whenever the expiration of the cast contracts comes into play. There is often no hard or fast date for this, but often there are a few weeks at least between upfronts and the expiration date. What this means is that in the event that CBS cancels the series, there is time for it to seek out another new home — or, there is time for CBS to figure out what they want to do if they haven’t made a decision by upfronts. Even after the cast expiry date it’s still possible to bring everyone back together, but it’s a lot more difficult just because some of these cast members may go off to seek other jobs. Katharine McPhee already has one at present doing Waitress on Broadway, but it’s only expecting to be a limited engagement and would not interfere with possible season 5 filming dates.
Just in case you want to see our take on the series’ renewal odds at present, you can do that over here.
